About this website

This website was used during the application process for the role of ABC Open producer in October 2010.

Hi Cath, Scott, Patrick and friends,

I’ve created this website/blog to support my interview and application for the role of ABC Open producer and for you to view and suggest different story ideas that may encourage or prompt North Queenslander’s to get involved with the ABC Open project.

Included are story ideas that specifically focus on particular topics relevant to the North Queensland region as well as story ideas that are organic, encouraging the community to add and shape stories in their own way, contributing to the collective ABC Open canvas and displaying the diversity in the lifestyles and values of Australians.

To get started I went out into the community to find out what type of stories people would like to contribute and added a few ideas of my own to make a list of twenty story ideas. These story ideas are listed on the right of this page and include:

The little things is an open story idea encouraging contributors to produce a diverse range of stories about the little things that people appreciate in life – from watching a sunset to collecting tea pots to the secret ingredient in home made secret sauce – THIS STORY IS PART OF MY IDEAS PITCH REQUIRED FOR THE INTERVIEW.

Dreams and memories is an open story idea exploring the dreams of young Australians juxtaposed against the memories of senior Australians. This story would compliment the current Now & Then project.

The place I live is an open story idea that encourages story contributors to explore and share answers to the question: What makes my home, my home? Is it the things in my house? The people around me? My local hangout? What makes my home, my home?

Mr and Mrs Military is a topic focussed story idea encouraging spouses, couples, or families who have a loved one working for the Australian Defence Force to share their stories and points of view about their lifestyles and concerns.

My 4WD and me is a story example. When hearing about my application for ABC Open my brother asked if I would help him share his story about going off road. You can view this story and see other story examples here.

Select different story ideas from the list to the right. The first five story ideas include criteria requirements including the idea and rationale for the project, strategies for targeting and engaging the community, practical considerations for producing the story and ways to display and distribute content. The remaining story ideas each outline the idea and rationale with additional notes.

You have the option to vote and comment on each story idea. Even though this website/blog is primarily for your eyes only, I’ve invited friends to interact with the website and to vote, comment on and contribute story ideas of their own.

I’m keen to become an ABC Open producer and will do my best to achieve this position and to contribute to the development of the ABC Open project. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Michael Bromage.

Another one, what about getting into schools and giving them the job of being producer for the day – without any guidance, just a camera and a storyboard and see what they come up with. Probably primary aged school children – that would be so cool to see what they came up with!

Hi Mick
Mate i think something on the changing landscape of North Queensland over the last 20 years due to the mining investment. changes could be focussed on Economic changes within regional centres, the chnaging landscape the accompanies mining (particualrly open cut), threats to the environment and ecosystems of the North inclusive of both coastal and inland ecosystems, imapcts on indigenous populations etc.

Hi Mick
the reef is a huge contributor to the economy of Queensland, and it is almost entirely accessed from North Queensland (with the southern most point in central Queensland). I think the dependance on this complex ecosystem could be investigated, with differeing opinions on how the reef contributes to the lives of North Queenslanders and how they feel it might be changing for better or worse. Fishing and tourism are just 2 of the potential categories through which the reef feeds into the Qld economy and way of life.
Also to be investigated would be the imapcts that our use of the reef is having on the reef itself. Over fishing, high levels of tourism, shipping etc, would all be affecting the reef and potentially in some ways people don’t realise. Investigating that might be quite revelatory on how much Qld cherishes, or is reckless, with one if its greatest natural resources.

HI Mick,

You’d make a great presenter. At the moment I am working for a project known as HARC. Humpback whale Acoustic Research Collaboration. We’re looking at how the migrating whales (some with calves about 2 wks old) are affected by man-made acoustic sounds. We immitate sounds produced by the likes of Navy, Oil/Petroleum industry etc. To me it’s an interesting concept – and perhaps a story is there. I can put you in touch with the right people if you are interested. Involved are UQ, Sydney Uni, Curtin Uni, DSAT and some Oil/Petroleum industry members.
Good luck with the application – you’d be great.

Jody

I was curious if you ever thought of changing the page layout of your website?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could
connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot
of text for only having 1 or two images. Maybe you could
space it out better?

I got this web page from my friend who told
me about this site and now this time I am browsing this website and
reading very informative articles or reviews here.
